Het zou de eerste keer geweest zijn dat we zo vlot door de controleposten zijn gestapt daar op het vliegveld in Tel Aviv, ware het niet dat er zich toch nog een incident voordeed. Aankomst met z’n zessen om twee uur ’s ochtends. Deze keer zijn er vier dansers van “vsprs” meegekomen (Juliana Neves, Mathieu Desseigne-Ravel, Elie Tass en Quan Bui Ngoc) + Serge Aimé Coulibaly (waarmee ik heb gewerkt in “Wolf”). Een beetje groggy, usual questions (we zeggen dat we naar Ramallah gaan en dat horen ze niet graag), usual stamps en dan op mekaar wachten aan de bagage band. Onderweg wordt Elie toch nog uit de groep geplukt en … drie uren ondervraagd. ‘Elie’ klinkt Libanees, ze vragen naar de naam van zijn grootvader en die kent hij niet. Hij is Gentenaar maar zijn vader is Libanees. Met zijn familie in Libanon heeft hij nauwelijks contact en zijn grootvader heeft hij amper één keer in zijn leven gezien … Verdacht, dus tijd winnen en jennen. Doorvragen, verdwijnen, drie kwartier later opnieuw iemand anders die hem dezelfde vragen stelt, verdwijnen, nog es drie kwartier … Het is vijf uur als Elie eindelijk wordt losgelaten, we rijden dan naar Tel Aviv en proberen nog een paar uur te slapen.
’s Morgens zien we dat het hotel vlakbij het strand ligt. Het is nog 20°, stralende zon, de eerste baders …
Tegen de middag komt men ons ophalen. Een klein Israëlisch busje – Palestijnse chauffeur – zal ons naar Ramallah brengen. Ik ken het landschap ondertussen al zo goed. Gelig, glooiend, rotsig, hier en daar stukjes groen, de witte settlements op de heuvels, clean … tot de muur opduikt. De muur die zich door de heuvels slingert zo ver je kan zien. Dat adembenemende choquante zicht. Checkpoint Qualandia, enkele jaren terug een chaotische plek, massa’s gele taxis waaruit mensen stapten die moesten aanschuiven, betonblokken,veel soldaten, veel wapens, veel jeeps en tanks, stof, vuiligheid en lawaai … Nu: mooie heraangelegde wegen, een rotonde waarop bloemetjes worden geplant, enkele wachthokjes waarin de Israëlische soldaten achter gepantserd glas zitten, netjes aanschuiven met de wagen, korte controle en je bent binnen.
De chauffeur rijdt ons naar het Popular Art Center in de Al-Ain straat (de enige straatnaam die ik makkelijk onthoud) waar Noora en Khaled van El Funoun en Shadi en Jessika van de Palestinian Circus School ons opwachten. We bespreken het programma voor de komende dagen: overdag werken we in de circusschool, ’s avonds met de dansers van El Funoun. Dan worden we naar onze gastgezinnen gebracht: Serge Aimé en Elie verblijven bij Suha, Juliana, Quan en Mathieu bij Shadi en Jessika en ik ga opnieuw bij de familie Barghouti (Omar, zijn vrouw Safa en hun kinderen Jenna en Nai). Omar was tot voor deze zomer choreograaf van het dansgezelschap El Funoun. Een ernstig conflict met Khaled heeft hem doen besluiten om uit de groep te stappen. Ik verneem later op de avond van Omar zélf hoezeer hij lijdt onder deze toestand. Hij was één van de grote bezielers van het gezelschap, de man ook die ons de voorbije jaren telkens heeft uitgenodigd om met de dansers van El Funoun te komen werken. Een heel moeilijke situatie want elk contact tussen hem en El Funoun is verbroken. Het zal de komende dagen voor mij tekenend zijn voor een situatie die ik tot mijn verbazing ook geregeld zie in de straten van Ramallah: broedertwisten tussen Palestijnen.

Ik word wakker van een geur die ik lange tijd niet meer had geroken: warme kleine pizza’s die Safa klaarmaakt voor het ontbijt. De hele familie is in de weer om mij te verwennen. De enige échte olijven, de zandkoekjes van Safa’s moeder, tomaatjes en komkommer en vooral: de Arabische koffie die zo heerlijk smaakt!
Al snel zijn Omar, Safa en ikzelf in een lang en intens gesprek verwikkeld. Ik heb héél wat in te halen. De situatie in Palestina is er niet op verbeterd, integendeel. Door de muur en allerhande andere maatregelen genomen door de Israëlische regering, worden de Palestijnen in een ijzeren wurggreep gehouden. Gaza is de hel. Een échte gevangenis waar niemand zomaar binnen of buiten kan. Dagelijks sterven er mensen omwille van een gebrek aan àlles: voedsel, medicatie … In de West Bank is het iets beter maar toch is 60% van de bevolking werkloos, grote en verspreide armoede (vooral buiten de steden), continue onderdrukking en pure apartheid. En dan de muur, telkens opnieuw zullen we het horen én zien: de muur, die onverdraaglijke beschamende muur. Acht meter hoog, helemaal rond de West Bank met af en toe een gigantische metalen poort die op gelijk welk moment kan worden dichtgemaakt. Het is zo’n absurd zicht … dat dit kàn.
Diepe meningsverschillen tussen Hamas en Fatah aanhangers zorgt ook voor een grote verdeeldheid onder de Palestijnen. Dat komt de Israëlische regering goed uit. Laat ze mekaar maar uitmoorden! De radicalisering uit zich op alle vlakken en heeft daardoor misschien ook een neveneffect op de evolutie van El Funoun. Misschien is dit een té sterk standpunt maar voor mij in elk geval een interessante denkoefening om mee naar huis te nemen: het gezelschap profileert zich als een Palestijns hedendaags dansgezelschap dat zijn wortels heeft in de Palestijnse traditionele dans. Vanuit het isolement waarin ze nu al decennia lang leven stelden ze de vraag aan Europese artiesten om met hen samen te werken. Op die vraag ben ik zes jaar geleden ingegaan en sedertdien komen ikzelf, Koen Augustijnen of Christine De Smedt jaarlijks naar hier om met de dansers te werken. We zijn niet de enigen, nog andere Europese choreografen komen naar hier.
Naar mijn gevoel zorgt dat voor een merkwaardige spanning. Palestijnse dansers worden geconfronteerd met nieuwe ideeën, uitdagende vormen en werkwijzen, maar willen die vooral niet zomaar kopiëren. Van belang voor hen is dat ze hun Palestijnse eigenheid behouden. En dat heeft dan weer te maken met het feit dat ze absoluut nood hebben aan een (internationale) erkenning van hun Palestijnse identiteit. Dat zorgt voor een moeilijke spanning bij jonge dansers die enerzijds geïnspireerd door die nieuwe inzichten willen experimenteren en anderzijds loyaal willen blijven aan hun afkomst en tradities. Ik legde Omar ooit uit dat wij indertijd geen enkel probleem hadden om de Amerikaanse postmoderne dans of de Duitse neo-expressionisten schaamteloos te kopiëren, want na verloop van tijd ontwikkelden zich daaruit nieuwe dansvormen die o.a. in en vanuit Vlaanderen ondertussen al meer dan twintig jaar school maken. Maar dat had dan misschien weer te maken met het feit dat wij in die tijd geen complexen hadden omtrent onze nationale identiteit, meer nog: we wilden niet zozeer gezien worden als Vlamingen of Belgen, maar wél als wereldburgers. Ondertussen slagen de politieke partijen in België er in ons na de laatste nationale verkiezingen en tijdens de voorbije zes maanden ‘onderhandelen’ over een nieuwe regering, vijftig jaar terug in de tijd te katapulteren! Vlamingen en Walen worden weer tegen elkaar opgejut alsof er een nieuwe boerenkrijg moet worden uitgevochten.
Ik word opgehaald door Shadi die mij en de dansers naar het repetitielokaal van de circusschool brengt. De circusschool is een vrij recent initiatief (iets meer dan een jaar oud) dat mede mogelijk werd gemaakt door Jessika De Vlieghere, een Vlaamse die sedert drie jaar in Ramallah werkt. Zij is de vriendin van Shadi. De school bevindt zich op de bovenste verdieping van El Kasaba, een gebouw waarin onder andere ook een cinema en een café zijn ondergebracht. Het is een relatief klein lokaal waar een heleboel materiaal ligt en hangt (trapezes en tissues) en waar enkele kinderen en volwassenen dagelijks komen trainen. Vandaag is het vrijdag, een vrije dag, dus er zijn nogal wat leerlingen. De broer van Shadi, Fadi, is samen met enkele andere jongvolwassenen één van de vaste kernleden van de circusschool. Daarnaast hangen hier nogal wat jongeren uit nabijgelegen vluchtelingenkampen rond, pikken een les mee, kijken naar de repetities, proberen zélf wat … maar ze zijn hier vooral grààg om uit de misère van het vluchtelingenkamp weg te zijn. Juliana en Mathieu hebben allebei een circusverleden. Juliana werkte jaren voor het Cirque du Soleil en Mathieu kreeg zijn opleiding in één van die beruchte hedendaagse circusscholen in Frankrijk. Niet alleen kunnen zij heel wat kennis doorgeven, de komende dagen zal ook blijken dat het schitterende lesgevers zijn voor zowel de hele kleine kinderen als voor de meer gevorderde artiesten.
Na een volle dag in de circusschool trekken we in de vooravond nog naar El Funoun. Daar zijn een vijftiental jonge dansers (veel nieuwe mensen in vergelijking met de laatste keer dat ik hier was). Ze stellen zich voor: het merendeel zijn jongeren van om en bij de twintig jaar en het zijn voornamelijk studenten ‘accountant’ (!) of politieke wetenschappen aan de Birzeit University in Ramallah. Na een intense les, gegeven door Quan, vraag ik om wat dansmateriaal te laten zien aan mekaar. De Palestijnen tonen fragmenten uit enkele van hun voorstellingen (het zijn telkens groepsdansen) en de Europeanen + Serge Aimé (uit Burkina Faso) tonen individuele improvisaties. Eén van de Palestijnse danseressen vraagt mij of onze dansers ook iets collectief kunnen laten zien … neen dus. Dat contrast tussen de Palestijnen die énkel groepsdansen en de dansers van Les Ballets die enkel individuele dansen laten zien, blijft ons bij.

Ik word heel vroeg opgehaald want vandaag brengt Shadi ons naar Hebron. Daar geeft de circusschool één keer per week les aan een groep jonge kinderen die in de binnenstad wonen. Waarom juist aan hen zal ons in de loop van de dag duidelijk worden.
De sfeer is uitgelaten en lacherig wanneer we vertrekken, maar geleidelijk aan wordt het stiller in de camionette. De confrontatie met het landschap onderweg wordt met de minuut zwaarder. De muur is werkelijk héél moeilijk om aan te zien. Maar daar wordt tegenwoordig iets op gevonden. Er zijn landschapsarchitecten aangesteld om die muur langs Israëlische kant te camoufleren. Er worden duinen aangelegd en bomen geplant die de muur moeten verstoppen. En op andere plaatsen waar dat niet kan, wordt hij ‘versierd’ met tegeltjes zodat hij begint te lijken op de geluidsmuren, die we hier, op de snelwegen in Europa kennen. De checkpoints gelijken dan weer op onze ‘péages’: de weg waaiert open in verschillende rijvakken die passeren langs design controlehokjes waarboven een design afdak. De weinige ingangen naar Palestijnse dorpen en steden achter de muur, worden niet meer aangeduid. Als je die dus niet weet zijn, rijd je er gewoon voorbij.
Wanneer we aankomen in een cultureel centrum in Hebron, wacht een enthousiaste groep jonge kinderen ons op. Het kan niet snel genoeg gaan. Kisten materiaal worden door hen naar binnen gedragen en ze tonen ons circusspulletjes die ze de voorbije week thuis en uit recuperatie materiaal hebben gemaakt. In de zaal worden de jongens van de meisjes gescheiden (hier leeft een gemeenschap die religieus conservatiever is dan in Ramallah) en krijgen ze ook apart les. Acrobatie voor het gordijn, evenwicht en jongleren achter het gordijn. De mannelijke leraars mogen de meisjes tijdens de les niet fysiek aanraken. Dat is niet evident als je acrobatie aanleert. Alle plekken in het gebouw worden gebruikt. Ik zie in de gangen enkele jongetjes tegen de muur trainen op een éénwieler. Ik lach met een frêle meisje met een T-shirt waarop ‘ROUGH’ gedrukt staat. Ik zie kleine ventjes die thuis flikflaks hebben ingestudeerd of die tonen hoe ze zich dubbel kunnen plooien … De lesuren vliegen voorbij en alle dansers zijn emotioneel zwaar aangedaan van het enthousiasme en de directe affectie van de kinderen. Na de les stappen de kinderen in een bus, enkelen roepen nog “Juliana … I love you!” en dan worden ze teruggebracht naar de binnenstad.
Daar wil Shadi ons ook naartoe brengen. Hebron is een redelijk grote stad en het centrum daarvan is volledig afgezet. Binnenin wonen behalve een grote gemeenschap Palestijnen, ook groepen extreem orthodoxe Joden. Zij hebben woningen van Arabieren ingepalmd en wonen in sommige wijken gewoon boven de Palestijnen. Het is van daar dat we de beelden kennen van de straten waarboven netten zijn gespannen omdat de Joden hun afval en vuil uit de ramen naar beneden op de Palestijnen gooien. In bepaalde delen van de stad mogen Palestijnen niet meer komen, in het centrum zélf zijn er tientallen checkpoints waar Palestijnen voortdurend én hardhandig worden gecontroleerd (daar waren we zélf getuige van en we mochten uiteraard niet tussenkomen om de Palestijnen niet nog meer in gevaar te brengen), groepjes extremistische Joden wandelen rond in de stad en kunnen op élk ogenblik Palestijnen beschimpen, bespuwen, omver duwen of zelfs gewoon aanvallen. De talloze Israëlische soldaten komen daarbij nauwelijks tussenbeide of steunen in sommige gevallen openlijk de Joden. Je houdt dit niet voor mogelijk. Het bestààt écht en is dagelijkse kost. De circusschool vindt hun project in Hebron waarbij zij de kinderen - die dit dagelijks moeten meemaken - minstens één keer per week uit die context weghalen, enorm belangrijk. We bezoeken de Moskee van Abraham. Begin jaren negentig stormde een Joodse extremist de moskee binnen en schoot er zijn automatisch geweer leeg op de biddende Palestijnen: 48 doden zijn er toen gevallen. De kogelgaten zijn er nog te zien.
Zwaar onder de indruk verlaten we de binnenstad. Het is stil in de auto. Shadi neemt ons mee naar een Arabisch restaurant. Grote ruimte, veel volk en veel en lékker eten. We komen stilaan weer tot onszelf. Ik krijg er telefoon uit Den Haag: onze documentaire “de balletten en ci en là” heeft er de hoofdprijs gewonnen op het International Dance Screen Festival. Of ik die vanavond op de prijsuitreiking kan komen afhalen … Surrealistisch gevoel.
’s Avonds bij El Funoun. Serge-Aimé geeft les. Opnieuw een enorm engagement van alle dansers. Daarna een collectieve improvisatiesessie. Héél mooi om te zien hoe El Funoun en de Balletten door mekaar geïnspireerd raken. In een gesprek achteraf met de dansers hoor ik hoe hongerig zij zijn naar dit soort van simpele oefeningen. Zij repeteren hoofdzakelijk in functie van hun repertoire en tijd om via improvisatie nieuwe ideeën op te doen, wordt er niet vaak genomen.
Na de les gaan we nog iets eten en onderweg lopen we Simon Rowe tegen het lijf. Met Simon werkte ik samen voor de productie “Wolf” en in 2004 vroeg ik hem mee te komen naar Ramallah. Sedertdien kwam hij hier nog enkele keren terug en nu werd hij door het theatergezelschap Ashtar gevraagd voor een gastregie. Die productie wordt in december uitgenodigd op een festival in Nederland, maar dat verloopt niet zonder problemen omdat er in het festival ook Israëlische groepen meedoen. De Palestijnen willen niet aan zo’n festival meedoen zonder dat zowel de festivaldirectie als de Israëlische groepen, openlijk verkondigen dat zij tegen de Israëlische bezetting zijn en dit festival geen normalisatie predikt (‘normalisatie’ staat voor initiatieven waarbij Israëli en Palestijnen worden samengebracht in activiteiten – discussies, workshops, artistieke initiatieven – waarbij de indruk wordt gewekt dat de situatie ter plekke ‘genormaliseerd’ is, dat de relatie onderdrukker –onderdrukte hier plots wordt opgeheven/niet meer zou bestaan).

Vandaag wordt er de ganse dag gewerkt in de circusschool. Juliana heeft een eigen tissue meegebracht die zij aan de school schenkt. Een aantal leerlingen hebben naar haar gevoel écht wel talent. Eén van hen is een heel jong frêle meisje in een roze pakje. Je verwacht het helemaal niet van haar maar ze klimt stevig in de doeken en blijft ondanks de zware inspanningen heel lang gemotiveerd. Zo ook de andere leerlingen die met Mathieu aan acrobatie werken.
Tijdens de pauze neemt Shadi ons mee naar de muqata: de plek in Ramallah waar Arafat zijn laatste dagen heeft geleefd. Toen we hier de vorige keer waren was het een kapotgeschoten en belegerde ruïne. Van hieruit werd Arafat doodziek naar Parijs gevlogen waar hij overleed. Nu staat hier zijn graftombe, een modern monument bewaakt door twee soldaten. Een tuin rondom en een nieuwe moskee vlakbij. Bovenop de moskee: een laser die ’s nachts tot in Jeruzalem schijnt. Arafat wordt hier door sommigen nog wel geëerd. Onderweg passeren we het Plein van de Leeuwen (El Manara), via de televisie de meest bekende plek van Ramallah. De plaats van waaruit alle protestbetogingen vertrekken. Tot voor kort ook een plein waar verkeer en voetgangers chaotisch door mekaar heen liepen. Tegenwoordig worden dranghekken in de voetpaden gebouwd zodat de voetgangers op het voetpad moeten blijven en slechts op bepaalde plekken de straten mogen oversteken. Al weken staan er overal politiemensen om de voetgangers die zoals vroeger toch in het midden van de straten blijven lopen terecht te wijzen. Een heel grappig tafereel en het lijkt er niet op dat de Palestijnen hun oude gewoonte zomaar zullen opgeven om naar Europees model keurig via de zebrapaden over te steken.
In de namiddag kijken we naar een video opname van één van de eerste voorstellingen van de school: “Circus behind the wall”. Via de acts geven de acrobaten commentaar op hun situatie. Een naïef-hoopvolle boodschap over vrede en beterschap. De circusschool werd al eens uitgenodigd om hun voorstelling te laten zien in Frankrijk en doet in februari 2008 ook enkele steden in België aan (voor informatie:
palestinian.circus@gmail.com ). Shadi vraagt ons eerlijke kritiek te geven. De leerlingen luisteren aandachtig en nemen notities. We blijven ook later tijdens het avondmaal verder brainstormen over mogelijke nieuwe invalshoeken voor hun spektakel.

Ik kan uitslapen en ben alleen in het huis. Hoor via de Balletten dat Lieven Thyrion en Herwig Onghena een gelijkaardige emotionele ervaring meemaken in Soweto waar ze op prospectie zijn voor hun project “One Day for Another World” een jaarlijks weerkerend evenement ten voordele van Oxfam tijdens de Gentse Feesten. Ik trek te voet naar de stad voor een wandeling van 45 minuten die ik graag maak.
In de circusschool werkt Juliana aan het bouwen van menselijke piramides. Een heel indrukwekkend gebeuren. Tijdens een gesprek met haar vertelt ze mij hoezeer ze gelooft dat circus hier een goed medium is. Het geeft de kinderen en jongeren het zelfvertrouwen en de kracht die ze hier zo nodig hebben. ’s Avonds geeft zij ook de opwarming en een les aan de dansers van El Funoun. Daarna wordt een stukje ‘Dabke’ aangeleerd, een heel levendige traditionele Palestijnse volksdans. Aan de dansers van Les Ballets wordt dan gevraagd er een stukje eigen interpretatie bij te maken en dat dan aan te leren aan de dansers van El Funoun. Het resultaat is fantastisch mooi, verrassend en heel leuk om te doen en om naar te kijken. Er is ook nu weer weinig tijd om dieper op het materiaal in te gaan maar hier ligt een zeer interessant idee om een voorstelling rond te maken. Het is ook grappig te zien dat de dansers van Les Ballets de ‘Dabke’ zo graag dansen!

Omar, die enkele dagen in Londen was, is terug. Hij had er onder andere een gesprek met de artistiek leider van het dansgezelschap Rambert die hem uitnodigt om voor het gezelschap een gastchoreografie te maken. Een erg interessante uitdaging voor hem om eens te werken met een groep supergetrainde dansers. Maar tegelijkertijd voel ik zijn aarzeling.
Day off en bezoek aan Jeruzalem. Shadi is onze gids. Die man is zo genereus en doet zovéél voor ons! De weg van Ramallah naar Jeruzalem kan op twee manieren worden genomen en dit naargelang het paspoort waarover de Palestijnen beschikken. Sommigen komen hier nooit buiten (één van de dansers, Hussein, is al twintig jaar niet meer in Jeruzalem geweest, hoewel hij daar geboren is en nog familie heeft wonen: hij heeft niet de juiste identiteitskaart). Sommigen kunnen enkel naar buiten via checkpoint Qualandia, maar dat is soms heel lang aanschuiven, anderen kunnen via een omweg en een rustiger checkpoint omdat ze een ‘Jerusalem ID’ hebben. Shadi heeft dat laatste.
Telkens wanneer we worden gevraagd om onze paspoorten te tonen zie ik de verbaasde gezichten van de soldaten: zoveel verschillende nationaliteiten in één camionette (Brazilië, Burkina Faso, Vietnam, Frankrijk, België …). Grote hilariteit wanneer een vrouwelijke Israëlische soldaat bij het checken van onze paspoorten tegen Mathieu roept: “Beautiful you are!”. Het wordt voor de rest van ons verblijf onze leuze!
Oost-Jeruzalem is rustig en kalm. De ingang naar de oude stad, Damascus Gate, ligt er quasi verlaten bij. Vroeger was het hier altijd enorm druk en waren hier tientallen boeren van het platteland die er hun waren verkochten. Nu mag dat blijkbaar niet meer. De oude stad blijft wel één van de mooiste stadsgedeeltes ter wereld. We bezoeken de typische plekken zoals de kerk met de graftombe van Christus, we klimmen op de toren van een ander nabijgelegen kerkje. Van daaruit krijg je een heel mooi zicht over de stad en zie je ook duidelijk waar de Palestijnen wonen en tot waar het Joodse gedeelte zich heeft uitgestrekt. In de verte ook opnieuw de muur die het landschap in tweeën splijt. We wandelen onder Sharon’s huis die zich in het midden van de Palestijnse wijk heeft gevestigd. Niemand weet trouwens echt hoe het tegenwoordig met Sharon gaat. Er wordt gezegd dat hij
nog steeds in coma ligt. We wandelen via een controlepost naar de Klaagmuur waartegen grote groepen Joodse gelovigen hun weeklachten fluisteren. Ik was er nog nooit zo dichtbij gekomen. Het is indrukwekkend en emotioneel. We flaneren door de nauwe straatjes van de souks, we eten de beste humus in het etablissement Lina, en drinken koffie op het terras van het Jeruzalem hotel, waar ik bij m’n eerste bezoek (2001) aan de bezette gebieden na een vlucht uit Ramallah (er waren toen zware aanslagen gebeurd in Jeruzalem en wij zijn toen door de Belgische Consul uit Ramallah gehaald) nog enkele dagen heb verbleven. Het doet altijd zoveel deugd om in Jeruzalem te zijn. Het is een stad die zoveel ‘charged energy’ uitstraalt. Het voelt aan als een kernplek van de menselijke geschiedenis en je gelooft nauwelijks dat zich hier zo’n immens menselijk, religieus en politiek drama afspeelt dat de wereld ook al eeuwen verlamt of als je wil: mee schrijft.
Shadi wil vroeger uit Jeruzalem vertrekken omdat hij ons ook naar een andere plek wil meenemen: Bethlehem. Na de plek waar Jezus stierf, gaan we naar de plek waar hij is geboren. Ik herken de omgeving nauwelijks (was hier enkele jaren geleden ook). De muur heeft het hele gebied hertekend. De ingang is nu ook hier na een militair checkpoint, een grote metalen poort die gewoon kan dichtschuiven en de hele stad compleet kan isoleren. Eerst bezoeken we de geboortekerk. Vroeger een zeer drukke plek omwille van de horden toeristen die hier voortdurend af en aan werden gereden. Sedert de gruwelijke beelden uit 2002 waarop de hele wereld kon zien hoe Palestijnse verzetstrijders zich in de kerk hadden verschanst en na de bouw van de muur rond de stad komen hier nog maar weinig toeristen. Shadi rijdt met ons ook langs de muur om te tonen hoe dicht hij tegen de huizen werd gebouwd. Sommigen konden voeger vanuit hun raam de oneindige glooiingen van het landschap zien evenals hun eigen olijfboomgaarden. Nu kijken ze tegen een muur van acht meter hoog en zijn die boomgaarden niet meer van hen, of de olijfbomen – waarvan sommigen honderden jaren oud – werden vernietigd. Op een plaats bouwde men de muur zelfs midden doorheen de speelplaats van een schooltje. De kinderen die vroeger vlak tegenover de school woonden moeten nu kilometers om en via één van de checkpoints stappen om tot bij hun school te geraken. Shadi rijdt langs de muur waaraan geen einde schijnt te komen. Iedereen in de camionette is duidelijk gechoqueerd.
Het is redelijk stil in de auto als we terugrijden naar Ramallah. Shadi en Jessika hebben ons uitgenodigd om de verjaardag van Shadi’s zus bij hen thuis te vieren. Een grote warme gastvrijheid. We genieten.

Te voet naar de stad en onderweg denk ik opnieuw aan wat er op dit moment in België aan de hand is. Al zes maanden onderhandelen verscheidene politieke partijen om een nieuwe regering te vormen. De kloof tussen Vlaanderen en Wallonië is al héél lang nooit zo diep geweest. In minder dan vijf maanden tijd slagen de politici er in het wankel evenwicht en de gematigde appreciatie van twee bevolkingsgroepen voor mekaar te doen omslaan in wantrouwen, misprijzen en in sommige gevallen: haat. Enkele jaren terug werd mij hier vaak gevraagd het Belgisch systeem uit te leggen. Het bleek voor nogal wat Palestijnen een voorbeeld van hoe heel verschillende gemeenschappen via compromissen toch met mekaar overweg konden. Nu wordt er zélfs hier meesmuilend over gedaan. Van hieruit lijkt het zelfs heel plausibel dat twee bevolkingsgroepen via uitspraken van politici zo tegen mekaar worden opgezet dat er geweld uit voortkomt. Ik kokhals wanneer ik denk aan de koppen van bepaalde politici. Ik stel me voor dat zij gedurende een week naar hier worden gebracht om te zien welke gevolgen een dergelijke houding zou kunnen opleveren. Eén weekje langs de muur, de checkpoints, de binnenstad van Hebron en een korte uitstap naar Gaza … Een schoolreisje als het ware.
Het is de laatste dagen plots erg koud geworden in de regio. Het regent ook veel. Ik schuil in een koffiebar en bekijk vanuit het raam het leven op de straat. Hier is de voorbije jaren toch veel veranderd. Zeer veel politiemannen op straat. Jonge mensen die uit Gaza komen wordt mij gezegd. En toch is het er niet rustiger op geworden. Er zijn regelmatig relletjes, rivaliserende groepjes (Hamas – Fatah) die mekaar op straat in mekaar timmeren. Ondanks het feit dat men ons voortdurend zegt hoeveel armoede er is zie ik opvallend veel 4 x 4’s door de straten rijden. Het doet me soms denken aan Moscou waar we enkele maanden geleden “vsprs” speelden. Een maffiose sfeer waardoor enkelen heel rijk kunnen worden. Ik hoor ook veel meer Engels praten dan vroeger. Zowat iedereen hier in de stad weet zich te behelpen in die taal.
Soms denk ik dat hier een geleidelijke verschuiving aan de gang is. Geen grote middelen meer: geen militaire raids in de stad, geen huizen die worden opgeblazen, mensen die willekeurig worden opgepakt of neergeschoten, gewoon een muur rond de stad, financiële steun voor gematigde leiders met wie te ‘onderhandelen’ valt. Ondertussen hier en daar opvallende verfraaiingen aanbrengen in de stad (een mooiere weg, reclamepanelen waarop het geluk van elke dag wordt aangeprezen, meer licht ’s avonds …) en net genoeg financiële steun geven zodat er niet teveel wordt gemord. Tegelijkertijd toch via de controles, de paspoorten en de apartheidswetten iedereen onder de knoet houden. Regelmatig toelating geven om nieuwe settlements te bouwen in de Palestijnse gebieden om te tonen wie er de baas blijft. En zo hopen dat de Palestijnen er zich bij zullen neerleggen. Binnenkort wordt de zestigste verjaardag van de Israëlische staat gevierd. Zestig jaar van intensieve bezetting, onderdrukking en apartheid … men zou van minder murw worden …
Het is de laatste dag dat we met de circusschool en El Funoun gaan samenwerken. Intensieve en ook wel ontroerende momenten zowel voor de Palestijnen als voor ons. Het klikte voortdurend de voorbije week en er is heel hard gewerkt. In de circusschool laten Mathieu en Juliana zeker sporen achter.
De studenten van El Funoun vertellen ons dat de Birzeit Universiteit al sedert enkele dagen gesloten is. Gevechten tussen aanhangers van Hamas en van Fatah zorgden voor vele gewonden en de directie besliste de universiteit te sluiten tot de studenten konden garanderen dat vetes niet meer op de campus zouden worden uitgevochten. Een vreemd verhaal.
Tijdens de laatste les valt de elektriciteit plots uit. De panne treft een heel deel van de stad. Bij ons zou wellicht de les worden opgeschort, hier zetten enkele gasten hun gsm lichtjes aan, plaatsen hun toestellen boven de spiegel en in dat vage licht wordt gewoon verder gewerkt. Even later is het euvel verholpen. Er wordt nog intens verder gewerkt aan die interessante mengvorm tussen El Funoun en de Balletten. Iedereen zweet zich te pletter en de spiegels en ramen zijn ondoorzichtig geworden van de wasem die ertegenaan plakt. Het afscheid op het einde van de les valt iedereen zwaar. Er wordt beloofd snel terug te komen.
Omar en Safa hebben de dansers van Les Ballets en Jessika, Shadi en Fadi uitgenodigd voor een afscheidsmaal. We worden heel warm ontvangen aan een overvolle tafel waarop al onze lievelingsgerechten staan. Er heerst een gezellige drukte. Voor Omar en Safa een gelegenheid om de mensen van de circusschool te leren kennen en vice versa. De kinderen van Omar en Safa spelen enkele nummers muziek op viool en dwarsfluit. Iedereen met de krop in de keel …
We blijven nog lang napraten en Omar is vooral geïnteresseerd in hoe Serge Aimé Palestina ervaart. Serge vertelt over de extreme armoede in zijn eigen land en over hoe hij het engagement van kunstenaars in moeilijke gebieden herkent … Iedereen krijgt de slappe lach van de verhalen die Omar vertelt over hoe hij de controleurs op de vlieghaven in Tel Aviv behandelt. “With British humour”, als je het mij vraagt.

Ik sta extra vroeg op om afscheid te nemen van Omar die moet gaan werken. Ik voel mij enorm thuis bij hem, Safa en hun kinderen. Ik zag ze deze keer niet zo vaak maar het is een warme plek waar ik word verwend.
Afscheid aan het gebouw van El Funoun. Het busje dat ons naar hier bracht voert ons terug naar Tel Aviv. De chauffeur vraagt ons om aan de controlepost van de luchthaven te zeggen dat we van Jeruzalem komen. Dat zal ons héél wat controletijd besparen, beweert hij. Het is toch even spannend als we de soldaat zien aarzelen wanneer hij ons antwoord hoort. Ik weet zeker dat we hangen als hij vraagt onze koffers te openen. Er zit bij iedereen voldoende materiaal in dat rechtstreeks verwijst naar Ramallah …
In de luchthaven zélf vertellen we wél waar we vandaan komen. Vroeger kregen mensen die uit de Bezette Gebieden kwamen een fluorescerend rode sticker op hun bagage geplakt en een persoonlijke begeleider tot aan de ingang van het vliegtuig. Nu zijn de kleurstickers vervangen door etiketten waarop een nummer staat, wat minder opvalt. De bagage wordt wél extra gecheckt (bij sommigen al grondiger dan bij anderen) maar daarna loop je ‘vrij’ rond. Ik word gebeld door een Belgische krant: of ik commentaar kan geven op de dood van Maurice Béjart …
Ook nu weer is het pas wanneer het vliegtuig opstijgt dat ik een enorme blok spanning van mij voel afglijden. Het was een goeie week met een zeer goeie groep dansers die mekaar enorm steunden en bevroegen.
Thuis zet ik nog even het nieuws op. Dag 165 van de onderhandelingen voor een nieuwe regering. Leterme heeft die laten doorgaan in een restaurant in de buurt van Brussel, “La Branche d’Olives” (ik voel een rilling over m’n rug). Lekker gegeten, geen resultaten geboekt.

Hoewel ik mij ervan bewust ben dat een culturele boycot van Israël voor Les Ballets vooral een symbolische daad is die op het veld weinig effect heeft (wél veel kwaad bloed zet bij de voorstanders van de ‘normalisatie’) blijf ik dat, na deze vijfde trip naar de Bezette Gebieden wel nog steeds verdedigen. De situatie in de regio geeft nog steeds weinig of geen hoop op verbetering voor de Palestijnen. De muur is een feit, de illegale settlements worden nog altijd verder gebouwd, de bezetting, onderdrukking en discriminatie van Palestijnen een dagelijkse realiteit. Het belet ons echter niet om ondertussen de dialoog en de samenwerkingsverbanden met Joodse en Israëlische artiesten hier ter plaatse (zoals dit in de compagnie ondertussen al meer dan tien jaar een dagelijkse realiteit is) verder te zetten.
